Mary Ojor is a 53 year old widow with 3 children. She joined a WNSP sponsored VSLA (Village Savings and Loan) five years ago. She requested a loan of 200,000UGX from the Mar en kuca VSLA group where she is a member which she used to buy 4 piglets. The purchase this loan enabled created a huge breakthrough opportunity. Through her care the piglets matured and started mating. A year later her original 4 pigs produced a total of 28 piglets. She sold 24 of them at 50,000UGX each giving a total of 1,200,000UGX. She then used part of the proceeds to buy one ox to assist in additional farming tasks. The 4 piglets she retained grew and matured she later sold them at 500,000UGX each giving her a total of 2,000,000UGX. She requested another loan of 200,000UGX from the VSLA to add to 2,000,000UGX in revenue from the sale of the 4 mature pigs which she used to buy one male and one female cow. Mary now uses ox-ploughing for cultivation on her farm which has greatly increased the area under cultivation and significantly improved her farm’s productivity.
