“I am so grateful to the VSLA group (obanga Akica) because it instructed me in things that have benefited me in my life and my family as a whole”

– Amongi Winnie Prossy Arach

When I joined obanga Akica in 2017, I already had a small produce business that was doing well. I began with the group by saving money. Then in 2018, I got a loan of 1.5m from the group to boost my produce business. l had the loan for 3 months and paid it back with an interest of 10%.

In 2019, I gained the courage to open up a new business selling clothes in my boutique. I borrowed 8 million shillings and this loan supported me as a start-up fund for my clothing business. I paid all the loan back to the group.

Then in 2020 my business started like any normal year but then lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic destabilized everything. After lockdown the group starting saving again. I borrowed 2 million to reactivate my business and paid it back with 2.2 million. I then borrowed 4.3 million and paid back 4.430 million after selling my goods and getting the profits. So my savings for 2020 were little because of Covid 19, only 490,000 shillings.

In 2021, we divided the profits of 2020 and started saving again. I got a loan of 4.9 million and I am using it to run the business. The business has grown, it is doing very well and everything is fine! With the business I am able to pay my tuition fees at Aduku UCC (Uganda College of Commerce) as I had dropped out because of fees. I have been able to finance and help my husband at home, buying food, soap, sugar and other items. I don’t have to ask my husband for small money for home use. I have also been able to help my brother’s children with school fees, food and other needs. It has also helped me support my husband with his different projects. We are constructing a wall fence at our home and all this is because of joining the Obanga Akica group!

I am so grateful and thankful for WNSP starting up this group for women empowerment, self-esteem and self-independence from our husbands.
