Costa Okwany runs a small shop and a produce business in Loro sub-county in Oyam District

Costa is a member and the treasurer of Mar en Kuc VSLA (Village Savings and Loan Association) in Loro Sub-county. She joined the WNSP supported VSLA to support her dream of starting a business.  She saw no way to launch a business prior to joining the VSLA because it would have been impossible to get the necessary startup capital.

“When I heard about the VSLA it was like an answered prayer for me. At the time, life was quite hard. I could not support my children’s education fully and was struggling to meet my basic needs. My greatest desire in life was to start a produce business, but this dream could not be realized without startup capital.”

“The process of the VSLA both in helping me to save my money and in offering loans to help me start and expand my business was invaluable in helping me realize my dream. I am now able to pay school fees for my five children. During the first season I manage to sell up to 12 tons of soy beans.  My goals going forward  are to increase my produce offerings and expand my storefront shop.”
